The trend for New Zealand guest nights continues to climb, Statistics New Zealand said today. Trends for North Island and domestic guest nights also continue to climb.

“Most trend series are rising,” industry and labour statistics manager Blair Cardno said. “These rises are helped by record numbers of international visitors.”

Although trend series are generally rising, other indicators show mixed results. In December 2013 (after removing seasonal variation):

New Zealand guest nights dipped 0.2 percent, following a rise of 1.7 percent in November.

North Island guest nights rose 0.4 percent, and South Island guest nights fell 1.2 percent.

Domestic guest nights fell 0.8 percent, and international guest nights rose 0.5 percent.

Guest nights rose for motels and backpacker accommodation, and fell for hotels and holiday parks.

The Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
